Developed in the early 2000s by Dr. Simeon Wall Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana, SAFELipo was originally conceived for use in revision liposuction procedures. It quickly became clear, however, that SAFELipo offers benefits to all liposuction patients. Its comprehensive, multi-step process allows for large or small-volume reduction without contour irregularities such as indentations, asymmetry and a wavy or rippled surface appearance.

SAFELipo has been shown to be effective on all parts of the body where liposuction is normally performed, including the abdomen, legs, arms, back, face and neck.

How the Procedure is Performed

SAFELipo uses a 3-step process to loosen, aspirate and re-shape fat, for true re-contouring of the area. The process works like this:

1. Separation. During this initial step of SAFELipo, the targeted fat is separated and broken up using a tool called a basket cannula or another specialized probe with or without power-assisted liposuction (PAL). Without harming surrounding structures, this important step emulsifies fat and makes it easier to remove, resulting in minimal complications and a comfortable recovery.

2. Aspiration. The second phase of SAFELipo is the aspiration or suction phase. Because the targeted fat has already been separated, the aspiration process of a SAFELipo procedure is quick and gentler than aspiration during other forms of liposuction. The emulsified fat is suctioned out of the body using a cannula. The surgeon is also able to use a thinner cannula and avoid damaging blood vessels which results in less scarring and can usually eliminate bruising.

3. Fat Equalization. The most crucial step of SAFELipo, fat equalization, is responsible for the procedure's smooth final results. After the targeted fat is aspirated, some residual subcutaneous fat will remain. The surgeon equalizes this remaining layer with a specialized probe or basket cannula , creating a smooth layer of local fat grafts between the skin and the underlying muscle. When this step is completed successfully, it greatly reduces the risk of lumpiness, dermal adhesions and other contour irregularities associated with liposuction.

SAFELipo Recovery

Recovery following a SAFELipo procedure is similar to recovery from most other forms of liposuction. SAFELipo is an outpatient procedure, which means that patients may return home after a short period of observation. Depending on the area of the body where SAFELipo was performed, the patient may be instructed to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling. Patients are instructed to keep an eye on their incisions, monitoring them for unusual drainage, pain and other symptoms of infection. Most patients need to spend a few days off their feet, but soon feel up to resuming light activity.

SAFELipo patients typically experience less swelling, bruising and discomfort than patients of traditional liposuction techniques, although these symptoms are not completely eliminated.

SAFELipo Results

SAFELipo has shown to be effective on the same areas of the body as traditional liposuction, including the:

  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Knees, calves and ankles
  • Back
  • Face, neck and chin
  • Breasts

SAFELipo can typically increase the chances of smooth, consistent visible results and minimize risks and complications typically associated with liposuction. When paired with a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle, the results of SAFELipo can last indefinitely.
